I’ve been developing film and making prints for 40 years. I can process your film no problem and send you a contact sheet, with the negatives, and make some great prints.


FADU is the natural home for anyone with an interest in the use of film and the darkroom, whether you are an amateur or professional.   On FADU you can show your work, exchange tips and techniques, and correspond with many like minded individuals.

In our world, Photography is the authentic analogous method of capturing reality. In our reality, our technology faithfully records and preserves the codes of the street. In our machines we have the seamless ability to trap light with silver gelatin.  Although we were born into the 90′s, the pre-digital age has chosen to give up it’s secrets in order it survives. We have chosen to keep the faith and continue the tradition of photography. More precisely excel past anything analogue has achieved because digital determinism is not the end of the film camera but the beginning of a new perspective. With this new vision we’ve built a new darkroom. We’re processing new film, making new images, developing modern imagery traditionally.

Black & White Basement is the brainchild of Keith Lyons, founder of Lab35 & Lab120 – UK’s award winning professional analogue laboratories for over three decades.

Today, our north-west London based darkrooms offer Black & White film processing  and traditional hand prints of the highest quality –  aimed at the dedicated photographer who still uses film as part of his repertoire. All printing is supervised by David Champion, who has over 30 years experience as an exhibition quality printer and a commercial photographer.

As well as the professional processing and printing services, we offer darkroom hire  and One-to-One tuition  with our senior printer and tutor. There are three darkrooms to choose from, equipped with DeVere and Leica enlargers and the choice of machine or dish paper processing. You can book a printing session for a full or half day and there’s a 2 hour session for film processing only.

If you would like to learn the art and craft of darkroom printing you can have a One-to-One tuition session with David who will cover both film processing and hand enlarging techniques in a day. We are also planning a series of 1 day workshops for alternative processes including Cyanotype, Gum-Bichromate, Lith Printing and Toning.

We have recently installed Nikon and Canon film scanners plus an A1 Epson inkjet printer which can all be hired by special arrangement. Please contact us for details.
